Challenge 2

It’s the second week, so here’s the second challenge. As with the first time, both were selected randomly.

  • Platform: PC
  • Theme: Exploration

A theme that’s much more general this week — exploration could mean exploring a dungeon, a jungle or a whole new imaginary land. That theme may seem easier than last week’s, but that lack of specifics makes this exercise more challenging, actually. A theme like last week’s “Film Noir” gave a rigid framework to start with, “Exploration” on the other hand gives me more latitude but also less material I know I’ll use.

Exploration has been used a lot in different videogames, of course, but it usually plays second fiddle to the core of the gameplay. Sure Zelda and Castlevania feature some exploration, but it’s not nearly as important as solving puzzles and killing things. I want to focus a lot more on actual exploration — the pleasure of discovering cool new things. I also want to avoid the obvious action-adventure approach.

Honestly, I’m kinda stumped at this point. I’ve thought of a lot of different possibilities and concepts, but nothing really clicked. I don’t have a solid hook to start with yet. Hopefully I’ll find one before tomorrow or it’s going to be a long week…
